Tackling Failure Demand in Primary Care - Insights from Recent Webinar

Updated: Oct 15

Healthcare experts recently held an insightful webinar addressing the critical issue of failure demand in the NHS.

Attended by general practices, integrated care boards, and primary care networks, the event offered essential strategies for identifying and reducing unnecessary patient demand caused by inefficiencies within practices.

The webinar explored techniques for understanding failure demand's impact, recognising common culprits like communication breakdowns or admin errors, leveraging data to pinpoint issues, and implementing targeted solutions.

The speaker lineup included:

  • Nick Downham, Independent Health and Social Care Expert

  • Simon Bricknell, Healthcare Improvement Director

  • Max Pardo Roques, Communications Expert

  • Chaired by Darren Jones, NHS Strategic Advisor

Max said:

"Practices struggling with overwhelming demand should take failure demand seriously. It creates unnecessary work by duplicating efforts or requiring patients to return when something wasn't done right the first time."

The webinar also highlighted how identifying inefficiencies is crucial, but having the right tools to address them is another challenge.

That's where the General Practice Demand and Capacity Optimisation Tool comes in. This cutting-edge analytics platform transforms how general practices optimise demand and capacity by gathering unique practice data and producing detailed reports uncovering improvement opportunities aligned with QOF indicators.

Simon added:

"The tool empowers practices with data-driven insights into their actual demand to effectively align capacity and elevate patient care."

The tool has proven successful in pilot schemes like Solihull Healthcare Partnership, allowing practices to redesign systems and reduce pressure on urgent care.

Key features include data-driven insights, alignment with QOF indicators, identification of improvement opportunities, prioritised recommendations, and enhanced patient experience.

The tool assists practices in managing demand and capacity by analysing unique data flows and pinpointing areas for optimisation. It offers guidance for maximising efficiency, whether addressing underutilised appointments, admin workflow bottlenecks, or resource allocation opportunities.
